Higher than Expected Hike
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 5.5%, twice the 25-basis-point increase markets had expected. It was the fourth consecutive rate hike, as policymakers are sounding the alarm for fears of heightened inflation.
This is coming as a bad time given the fact that there’s a major crunch for diesel and gas coming out of the Strait of Hormuz right now with Southeast Asia cutting it dangerously close. Rising imported energy costs, a weakening currency and monetary tightening that can further suppress domestic demand.

Higher Metal Pries Means More Profits…Right?
On October 23, Norsk Hydro, a massive aluminum producer reported quarterly adjusted EBITDA of NOK 9.09 billion, below the NOK 9.53 billion analyst consensus. Its shares fell 6.2% in early trading to their lowest level in over a year. But that’s not the main part, the main part relates to the fact that aluminum prices are indeed higher.
Gulf supply disruptions are lifting European aluminium premiums, yet higher smelting costs, weaker realised metal prices and expensive gas are eating into profitability.
