Myelin

Everybody Needs Protection

An interesting photo here showing neurone cells in your brain (seen in blue) and they are lined by myelin (seen in green). This was taken from a cell culture & specifically stained to highlight the different cell types. In red are astrocytes, different type of central nervous system cells.

Neurone cells convey the electrical information that makes it possible for you to think, remember, move, feel with your hand or feel emotion. Myelin is a fatty covering that facilitates this conduction to happen smoothly. Many neurological diseases are the result of damaged myelin. An immense amount of effort is being put into researching how to preserve and protect myelin layers for both healthy and diseased patients.

Did you know that in Multiple Sclerosis when somebody has a flare up their myelin is attacked? It repairs naturally with a process known as remyelination, but less than it was before, further eroding this protective, supportive barrier for our neurone cells.

There’s a lot of information that remains unknown about the brain!
