Who has a Budget Surplus

Squirrels are Tiny, but they still Survive the Winter

How do Squirrels survive such horrendous conditions and the threats from predators? They have it engrained in their DNA to save more than you consume. If you abide by this principle you’ll have enough energy to give you enough leverage to find a mate, find shelter to procreate and avoid being eaten. Not that I’m comparing you to a rodent but economics is largely no different–yet too many of us have gotten used to days without the need to hide from predators or find shelter in hard assets during tough times.

If a squirrel can do it, with its tiny little wiry brain, how hard can it be? Well, quite challenging as it turns out. Last year, I discovered that these were the only countries to run a budget surplus (TTM)–> Only Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and Russia in Europe; nobody in the Americas (incl. Caribbean); Iraq & a couple of ‘stans in Asia; Gabon, Mauritania & Congo in Africa.

It was about this time last year when I had checked, so it’s appropriate to check this again. There’s more countries–but not enough.

This was the order of Budget Surplus data. Notice the importance of being in an oil producing country (oil is far from dead, folks). Norway and Kuwait are really showing the world who’s boss but one country that many have forgotten is Iraq! Iraq has a GDP 45.5% of Norway, 50% of Ireland and 69% of Denmark–so it’s not a small fish like people believe.

If we compare the surplus to deficit crowd (excluding micro states & territories). It’s still only 27 countries (and only 9 ran a surplus above 3% surplus).

Since most countries are in a precarious position, the best thing you can do is to insulate yourself and your family as best as possible. If we are the squirrel, are you prepared for a black swan (market crash) to swoop down to crush you? Are you prepared if supplies dry up? Are you as healthy as you could be? Is your relationship where it needs to be to handle struggles together? I believe you can (& should) bear this burden of responsibility.

Some things to think about–because while most countries are acting like sitting ducks–you can position yourself in safety or perhaps, even become the predator and benefit from these chaotic times. Open Door Consultancy is your affordable answer
